China’s historical bushes of Da Hong Pao produce one of the vital expensive teas on the planet, astonishingly costing more than 30 instances its weight in gold.
Da Hong Pao (Huge Red Gown) is a Wuyi rock tea grown within the Wuyi Mountains. It’s a oxidized, dark oolong tea.
Based on legend, the mother of a Ming dynasty emperor was cured of a sickness by a tea, and that emperor sent great red robes to dress the 4 bushes from which that tea originated. Six of those unique bushes, rising on a rock on the Wuyi Mountains and reportedly relationship again to the Song dynasty, still survive right now and are extremely venerated. Famously expensive, Da Hong Pao can sell for up to US$1,025,000 per kilogram or US $35,436 per ounce (20g of Da Hong Pao tea from one of many mother plants was sold for ¥156,800 in 1998).
Authentic Da Hong Pao doesn’t just cost its weight in gold – it costs more than 30 times its weight in gold: almost $1, four hundred for a single gram, or properly over $10,000 for a pot. It’s probably the most costly teas on the earth.
