What’s In A Name?
When I first started my business back in 2012 I did a lot of research on being an entrepreneur, being a business owner and, what to name your business. It turns out, there is a whole lot of thought process that goes into naming your business.
One of the first things I learned was to make it catchy. It didn’t have to have anything to do with your business, just catchy. I believe this is where a lot of people drop the ball with naming their business. So many people choose really long business names, how is anyone supposed to remember it? Ever go to send someone an e-mail and you’re looking at their business card and it reads: Bob@ihaveeverythingplannedforyou.com, and you’re like, what the hell kind of name is that Bob? (btw, I made that up)
Think Walmart, Target, FaceBook, BestBuy, you get the idea. And when you think about these names, they really have nothing to do with their respective businesses, just great, memorable names.
When you make your name catchy, it not only makes it easier for people to remember, it also makes a great conversation piece, perfect when you are networking or introducing yourself to someone new. I get it all the time with my business, NineFrogs. People are always asking me what it means, how did I come up with the name, does it have anything to do with my business (it does not) and a slew of other questions.
Then I add that I’m a Professional Image Consultant and Personal Shopper. And then people are really intrigued and ask more questions. As business owners, that’s what we want. We want people to want to know more about us, ask questions about us and our businesses and what we can offer (future) clients.
