No matter how many relationships you’ve been in, no matter how many single friends you’re surrounded by. The truth is that when you’re single, Valentine’s Day will hit you every once in a while, with its display windows around town covered with quotes about love and with the chocolate section in your favorite grocery store full of hearts and teddy bears celebrating the “day of love”. I remember that the first time I truly recognized the existence of Valentine’s Day was when I was in elementary school. I asked my dad why people came up with the idea of a day to remind their loved ones why they’re together and what’s amazing about them.
‘He looked at me and said, “It’s just marketing, you’ll get it when you get older.” Nonetheless, he would get me a wrapped package of Baci Perugina (the most delicious chocolate confectionery in the world, if you ask me) every year, telling me that I was the only person he needed to celebrate the day with.’
As years went by and I moved away from home, I don’t really get chocolate anymore. It’s not a big deal, to be honest. Being single is one of the most exciting, relaxing and fun experiences I consider myself lucky to happen to me. I can do what I want, I can spend my days exploring places without having to ask someone to keep me company all the time and I am not going to brag about it in an article, as most people would want me to. So, this is for all of you single pals out there.
Singles Can Also Have a Valentine’s Day
Enjoy your night in. Watch a rom-com that makes no sense or that reminds you of that crush you got three years ago over that guy you discovered have had a girlfriend all the time you overanalyzed the way he looked at you or texted you (true story btw). Think about love, don’t let it ruin your day. Valentine’s day is a day made for love, but it was never specified what kind of love. If we were to take the true story of Cupid as an example, we’d be celebrating people forced to be in love with someone just because shot by an arrow. Is that really what you think love is about? I think love was my dad getting me chocolate every year, but loving yourself is probably even more powerful and genuine than that.
Take a bath, watch a movie, pick up your phone and call your grandma to tell her you love her. Spend your day spreading love without the need of being in a relationship to do so. We weren’t born to love another person. I think we were born to spread love around all the people that make our life a little bit better every day by being there and that it’s not automatically connected to romance. Not at all.
I hope you’ll have the best Valentine’s Day you’ve ever dreamed of! And if you’re single or your girl/boyfriend is not jealous, I can be your date on the 14th. I’m probably going to fool around with my friends, eating chips and taking a break from studying and working out for a night. If you want to join us, you’re welcome to come to Glasgow! And if you can’t, just take a look around you, I’m sure there are at least 10 people in your life who would die to be your Valentine.
