My Selfridges Makeup Haul – Urban Decay Loves!
‘Tis the season to be jolly! It’s finally December and everywhere there are lights, Christmas songs and, in the case of makeup, lots of sparkle and glitter! I have been looking forward to this time of year, not simply because I love Christmas and the festivities but because it gives me an excuse to create lovely winter looks and test lots of holiday releases!
However, this post focuses on a makeup haul from late Summer – Autumn rather than the festive season, and is filled with some great Urban Decay finds! I bought everything from Selfridges when they held a Beauty event and got some great items, as well as a few freebies! If you have never been to one of their beauty events, it is well worth attending!
My makeup haul
All of these lovely products were free or discounted for the event, so I naturally made the most of it! Here’s what I bought:
- Urban Decay’s Jean-Michel Basquiat Eyeshadow Palette
- The Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick in 1993
- Illamasqua’s Pure Pigment in Muse
- The Urban Decay Vice Special Effects Lip Toppers in White Lie and Litter
- Illamasqua’s Beyond Powder Illuminator in Deity
The freebies I received were a selection of Urban Decay Vice Lipstick samples, their eyeshadow primer potions and their colour correctors and a Clarins Smoky Eye palette!
Urban Decay has always been a favourite brand of mine. Not only do they release amazing makeup ranges but the quality of the makeup is very good. When I first found out they were going to introduce lip toppers to their range I was super excited! Lip toppers are one of my most loved makeup items – check out my post on them here!
The Lip Topper
I actually reviewed White Lie in my lip toppers post and having now used it a few times, my original view has not changed – I still love the product! Litter is different in that the putty is infused with bright green iridescent glitter which catches the light beautifully once applied and stays put, just as White Lie does. Similarly, there is no specific fragrance to the topper and it sets in place without needing to be ‘topped’ up! I think these are a great addition to Urban Decay’s collection and a must for lipstick lovers!
Vice Liquid Lipstick
Also on the subject of lipsticks is the Vice Liquid Lipstick in 1993. I have loved exploring the liquid lipstick trend (see my post on liquid lipsticks here) and the Urban Decay version is excellent. There are many colours to choose from but I decided to buy 1993 because it is a perfect medium brown/nude shade which will pair with most makeup looks.
The pigmentation is brilliant as you would expect from Urban Decay and the consistency is reasonably loose but not runny. It applies smoothly and dries down within a minute leaving a fully opaque finish which is almost fully matte. It can then be left that way or a gloss or lip topper can be applied on top. Unlike some other liquid lipsticks, it does not dry out the lips or stain when trying to remove it. It is one of my favourite liquid lipsticks now and I am sure I will buy more from the range in time!
The Eyeshadow Palette
Finally, the Jean-Michel Basquiat palette! I fell in love with this palette from the moment I saw it online. When I finally bought it I couldn’t have been happier! I love Urban Decay eyeshadows so I had high hopes for this palette and I have not been disappointed. The colours are all soft and buttery with minimal kick back and the pigmentation is as excellent as always. The selection of colours is perfect for day and nighttime wear and will suit all skin tones. When blending them, it takes little effort to create a seamless look. In short, its a great creation and it is now on sale so try and get your hands on it if you can!
Here are the swatches for everything:
I love Illamasqua makeup! Everything I have ever bought from the brand has been wonderful and amazing quality. These 2 items were both limited edition at the time so I had to have them and I am glad I did!
The Pure Pigment
The pure pigment is a gorgeous sparkly pale pink, finely milled loose powder which glides into the skin with ease. It can be applied to appear sheer or more opaque if you layer it. It can also be used with a mixing medium for a more intense colour payoff. As with all the pure pigments from Illamasqua, the colour lasts for hours, blends easily and has a high sparkle effect – perfect for Christmas!
The Illuminator is no less impressive! It is a unique colour in that it looks white – gold but on application, it is actually a pale green-gold – blue shimmer! Illamasqua highlighters are always excellent quality and they always deliver a subtle or strobe-like effect depending on what you want! I also love that you get a good amount of product for what you pay and you only need to use a small amount to create the effect you like. This highlighter is a must if you like to try unusual colours in your looks! The swatches for both are above.
I couldn’t believe it when I received a full sized Clarins eyeshadow palette as a freebie! This is their smoky palette and contains 10 eyeshadows, all designed to create the perfect smoky eye. In the end, I did not use this palette and actually gave it away as I have so many palettes. But, I did swatch a couple of the shades and was pleased with the colour payoff and the texture. Clarins is a good brand in most respects so I am sure this palette’s owner is enjoying it!
Urban Decay Samples
The sample packs from Urban Decay are genius and the perfect way to test some of their best products without investing too much money. I have tested the eyeshadow primers and can safely say I understand why they are praised so much! My eyeshadow stayed in place and vibrant throughout the days I used the primers. Only a tiny amount was needed to fully prime both eyes.
I have also tested a couple of the fluid correctors and was also impressed with the coverage they delivered and the evening of my skin tone and any redness!
As for the lipsticks, I tested one of them to see how it delivered and saved the remainder for my makeup kit – they are perfect to give to makeup clients so that they can keep using the same colour I applied on them! From my own test, I found the lipstick to be reasonably hydrating, it provided full and even coverage and good colour intensity. I would happily buy the Urban Decay Vice lipsticks and love the colour selections too.
And there you have it! Another fulfilling makeup haul resulting in some fab finds and long-term treasures! If you have not tried any of these products or the brands themselves, you really should – they all have some great new holiday collections worth buying, whether for Christmas presents or to treat yourself!
