Why You Need to Remember To Self Care
This past week, I learned the hard way about the importance of taking care of yourself. For a couple of weeks, I have been feeling run down and really tired. I was stressed out, and it was taking its toll on my body.
However, I was taking care of myself. I was getting enough sleep, drinking water, and I was making sure I was eating a balanced diet. But, I wasn’t resting. While I felt off, I thought since I was simply exhausted and drained, it was nothing.
So, I powered through, and avoided complaining.
Last Tuesday, I woke up. I felt weak and tired. My gut told me that something was wrong. Sure enough, my legs gave out and I fell in my bathroom.
I ended up having to go to the emergency room. After three hours of waiting, I found out that I was severely dehydrated. I was sent home after an IV, and for the rest of the week, I was extremely exhausted.
However, I still felt terrible about saying that I was so tired. I felt as if I’m complaining, so I went back to work since I felt relatively okay. I ended up going home and sleeping for the rest of the afternoon. Even as I type this, I am still feeling the effects of being downright exhausted.
After this experience, I began to realize one thing — I really need to listen to my body and take care of myself. Especially after feeling sick, and after leaving the emergency room.
After this realization, I began to think about the source of my reluctance to do things. I realized that it came from the fact that everyone in our society always needs to be busy. Whether it may be at work or at home, I always feel as though I have to do something.
Therefore, when it’s time when rest is absolutely necessary, then you feel guilty for not doing anything. You think you can do that one simple thing — whether it may be going to the store or the shopping mall — when you just need to spend a day in bed.
Therefore, I had to learn the true importance of actually listening to my body. At the end of the day, it’s important to rest and just take the time out you need — whether you are sad, sick or all of the above.
Naturally, it is easier said than done. Sometimes, it can be deemed impossible. But, bearing a responsibility to ourselves to ensure that we take care of it is important. We are programmed to put self care at the bottom of the list — under work and chores — but, the truth is it should be just as important as making sure you studied for your final. And, if you don’t listen to that voice, how could you perform as well as you would want to?
Food for thought, just saying.
So, my take home message is simple and clear. Be sure to rest when your body tells you that you need it. Be sure to get lunch when you’re body says that you’re hungry while you are working on that paper. Otherwise, it can lead to something so much worse.
