Highlighter Heaven – 8 of The Best To Try

 In Beauty & Grooming

Who doesn’t like a good highlighter? If you’re a makeup addict like me, you’ll have a growing collection of them as I do! Highlighter is one of my favourite makeup products to wear – on my cheekbones, under the eyebrows, in the inner corner of my eyes, basically anywhere I can make it look good! They come in many colours and consistencies, from liquid to cream to powder, and they can be used in many different ways. Due to their popularity and the ongoing love for contouring (which is another process for which highlighter can be used), most makeup brands have a selection of highlighters to choose from and are regularly introducing new and more beautiful versions!

So, what is highlighter for?
Highlighter can transform the entire look of your face. It can create the illusion that you are glowing from within and give you a more youthful complexion when applied properly! It is ideally placed anywhere that the sun would normally catch the light, such as the forehead, the cheekbones and the bridge of the nose. It can also be applied on the cupid’s bow of the upper lip, the tops of the shoulders and even mixed into moisturisers and foundations!

Depending on the colour of the highlighter and your skin tone the end result will be different.  The easiest way to decide which highlighter will suit you is the silver versus gold jewellery test. If you find that gold flatters your complexion, your best suited to highlighters that have a warm bronze, gold or copper tonality. If silver or platinum flatters you, a highlighter that has flecks of silver or pale pink in it will work well. A warm-pink is neutral and works on most people.

8 of my favourites

I love all the highlighters I own but there are some that are particularly lovely. They are all different shades and colours from a variety of brands but each provides excellent long-lasting pigmentation, can be subtle or intense and easy to apply. They can all be used as eyeshadows too!

1. Stila Heaven’s Hue in Transcendence

This is a pretty lilac colour in a putty – like texture with little to no fallout. It can be applied with a fan brush or your fingers and built up to strobing effect. It looks lovely on most skin tones but stands out well on fair to olive colouring.

2. Becca Shimmering Skin Perfect Pressed in Champagne Pop

If you love makeup you will likely have heard about Becca’s Champagne Pop products! This highlighter is a highly pigmented powder texture which needs only the lightest touch to obtain a dazzling peach glow. It suits most skin tones but particularly compliments a tanned or deeper skin. It looks particularly pretty in the inner corner of the eyes!

3. Laura Geller Baked Gelato Swirl Illuminator in Diamond Dust

This highlighter is an iridescent pink powder which catches the light perfectly! It was a limited edition but is now part of the regular collection due to its popularity. It works well on any skin tone but for lighter or paler skin it’s an ideal match.

4. Charlotte Tilbury Skin Gilding in Bar of Gold

This was so popular it was sold out for months and I had to be added to a waiting list! Once I finally received it, it was worth the wait. It’s a powder highlighter in a pale gold which looks almost silver in some lighting! It applies smoothly and easily with minimal fallout and will look gorgeous on anyone! I love to use it under the eyebrow for added definition and emphasis!

5.       Jouer Powder in Rose Gold

I fell in love with this highlighter as soon as I saw it online. Rose Gold makeup is a massive trend and has been for some time so it was only a matter of time before every brand released something in that colour! Jouer is one of my favourite quality brands so I knew this highlighter would be amazing and I was right! The colour is two-tone with a slight shimmer, easy to blend and build up and deeply pigmented. As with most rose gold products it also suits everyone and can be applied with a brush or finger.

6.       MUA Luxe Strobe & Glow Kit in Pink Lustre

This kit actually contains 2 highlighters – 1 in powder and 1 in cream. I generally use the powder version because it is more noticeable but the cream version is also lovely, just subtler and sheen-like. The colour is a true pale pink, easy to build up and ideal for fairer skin tones, although it looks great on all colouring!

7.       Bobbi Brown Highlighting Powder in Bronze Glow

I bought this powder highlighter some time ago but it’s still a great option in my arsenal. Because of the colour it can actually be used as a bronzer as well as a highlighter! It provides a unique multidimensional shine when applied, is best applied with a brush and gives the skin a warm glow. It looks stunning on most deeper skin tones.

8.       Illamasqua Beyond Powder in Deity

This is one of my newest highlighters and is currently being publicised regularly on social media. It is also one of only a couple of highlighters I own which provides a green – blue hue! It is not obvious from the colour of the powder but after application you are left with an unusual shimmering green-blue-gold strobe! Its fast become one of my preferred highlighters and will work for all skin tones and enhances blue and green eyes too!

Finally, this post would not be complete without swatches! All of these swatches are based on 1-2 swipes of each highlighter:

So, that is my review of 8 quality highlighters! I own many more but if I reviewed them all this post would never end! If you are new to highlighter, or are a little scared of applying it properly I would highly recommend experimenting with it and trying some of the options above – you don’t know what fun you are missing!
