“(Eagles) Are The Champiooooons My Friends”

 In Americanoizing

“Goooo Pats!” or “Fly Eagles fly!”? Probably many readers are clear about which team they supported in the last Super Bowl, or knew the trajectory of the man I knew as Gisele’s husband, Tom Brady, better known (by his friends and fans) as “Tom Terrific” or “Touchdown Tom “, or watched the success of the Philadelphia Eagles throughout the season.

However, it was my first genuine approach to this event, and I say genuine because even though I have seen it many times (never completely), I really only paid attention to the snack, the atmosphere, the commercials and of course the excitement to see what singer would be at halftime, what clothes they would wear, how they would dance, what songs, etc … In a few words Super Bowl for me was eating for almost 2 hours in front of a TV, getting up to do something else, watch the famous halftime and continue eating for the next two hours, then see the jokes that had come out of the Super Bowl and feel that I understand what it is.

But no, not this year, I do not know if I should receive recognition for this because it’s really something irrelevant but it is the first year that indeed, I enjoyed the Super Bowl.

It all started with the visit of some friends to the house for the weekend with the main reason to see the Super Bowl, my boyfriend and I were “partially” excited because we have been wanting to find a sport that interests us, but we were really more excited in what we were going to cook (some of you already know that my boyfriend – the real chef- and me love to cook).

On Friday it occurred to me to ask my friend Enrique, in the middle of the party, about the Super Bowl that we would see that Sunday, and he started telling me a lot of things, the importance of Tom Brady’s participation, the functions of each player, practically the basic rules of the game. At that moment I felt interested and I decided to pay attention to Sunday’s game and try to understand what was happening.

The day of the game arrived, the food was going to be a homemade boneless chicken that and some delicious German sausages and snacks in general. As a good “millennial” I don’t really have a cable TV system, since I only use platforms like Netflix, HBO GO, among others, so a few minutes before starting the game we were seeing how to solve the problem by creating an account on ESPN and watch it live broadcast.

The game started with the national anthem singed by Pink, a singer that if you’ve read something from me you´ll know how much I love her, but it did not seem like a great presentation, I still don’t understand why just minutes before singing she decided to take the gum out of her mouth, but I guess it can happen to anyone, so then the basic celebrations of the game came and the game started.

My friend Enrique, with whom I am very grateful, began to explain to me what was happening in real time in the game, the offense went in and out and so the defense, and as they had told me that the Patriots were the “star” of the game, I decided to bet with a friend that they would win the Super Bowl.

To my surprise, and without any intention of sounding like a sports commentator, the Philadelphia Eagles were immediately ahead of the game, and honestly even though the score was very tight I thought they played amazing and I started to assume that it was too likely that the Eagles would be champions.

I was so on the game that I lost the whole notion of time, until my boyfriend finally came up with the food tray and I realized that it was then, part time. Without the intention of promoting our likely future cooking blog (hahaha), the wings were delicious, crunchy, spicy, perfect to cover with the appropriate Super Bowl paraphernalia, and the German sausages were a total success.

I was really excited to see Justin Timberlake, let’s be honest, any woman born between 1986 and 2000 knows that this Disney star can become really sexy, because even when crying a river, he’s always bringing sexy back. Personally Justin was always my favorite of the Nsync group and apparently of the majority of the audience too, and it is clear that he was probably the most talented (I do not know what JC Chasez, Lance bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick are doing), but without doubt they all inspired us to dance “Bye bye bye”, “Pop” or “It’s gonna be me”.

I’ve always liked him, besides having an incredible style, I love how he dances, his music is good, he was with Cameron Diaz (actress who fascinates me) and he is married to a beautiful and sexy woman, Jessica Biel. So yes, we can say that he is a complete 10.

But if I must be honest, talking about the Super Bowl and not turning this into a biography of JT, I expected more choreography, more dance, more colors, a “je ne sais quoi”, I will not say that I did not like it. Yes, I liked it, it was a dynamic performance, the songs he chose were excellent and he showed his piano skills in the tribute to Prince, but let’s see we are talking about someone who has been compared to dance as Michael Jackson, I’m not saying that Justin had to throw up the roof like Lady Gaga, but I did expect some “moonwalk” with massive dancers, an ending as in “Smooth Criminal” or that my beloved Britney Spears would appear and be the reunion of the century ( both dressed in full denim).

The end of the show arrived (which I do not know if because of my interest in the match or what but it seemed too short) and we returned to the game. I felt totally nervous and at the same time I felt ridiculous because I was not really going to any team, I heard rumors of some “traps” of Tom Brady that I do not know if they are myths or realities and I’m not interested in criticizing, but I must confess that all the above made me lean a little; even though I was going to lose some money, in supporting the Philadelphia Eagles.

What a wonderful game, from seeing how Brady slipped the ball with butter hands, to see the Pats take the lead for a few minutes, to finally reach the move that surprised me the most, not only because minutes before I asked Enrique if something like that was possible and suddenly it happened, if not because they showed us an incredible victory in a clean way. So if happen to spend your Sunday watching the Super Bowl you know what move I´m talking about and you can understand me, so after that,Nick Foles (Quarterback of the Eagles) becomes the first QB in the history to give an annotation pass and receive an annotation pass in a Superbowl, so yes it was something incredible to see.

Note that this article is completely different from what I usually write, but it felt important to me to share with you how I went from being a 0% person interested in this sport to one who jumped out of her seat to celebrate the victory of the Eagles.

If I’m honest, it’s a complicated sport, you have to pay close attention and above all have someone like Enrique around explaining what is happening (at least at the beginning). I also do not assure that I will follow up the entire next season of the NFL, but I will certainly be very interested in the next Super Bowl.

Actually my invitation this week (my former readers will notice that now I write Fridays and not Wednesdays so that you can calmly carry out my invitations), it is that you show an interest in a sport, that you put yourselves at the task of learning something new. Sports are usually something fun to watch because it involves large groups of people, passions, emotions, snacks, drinks and unless your team loses, they are very fun. So in the end I invite you to try something different, learn about box, baseball or even a strange sport like curling.

Tell me your opinion of the Super Bowl or in what sport you are going to become experts, I know that for now I consider myself a big fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, but who knows, I can fall in love with another team in the next Super Bowl.

Ahí nos vemos!
